Full time Edge of Care Support Worker at BCP Council
Job Description
Edge of Care Support Worker in our Keeping Families Together Team
If you are interested in an exciting, creative and ground breaking role supporting parents/carers and young people to better support themselves at a time of crisis then this post is for you!
We are currently looking to appoint a Grade G Edge of Care Support Worker to our ‘Keeping Families Connected (KFC)’ team in BCP. The post is full time 37 hours on a fixed term contract (covering maternity leave) for one year from the date of appointment.
BCP is an interesting and beautiful place to live and work. We aim to be the employer of choice in the South West. We put an emphasis on learning and development and we work closely with other organisations on professional development programmes.
We will strive to look after you and support you in your work as we recognise that working in Children’s Services and supporting young people and families can be challenging work .
We are currently looking for an Edge of Care Support Worker with experience and skills of working directly with parents/carers and families. The focus of your work would be working with parents and carers but the work may also involve direct work with children and young people too. Young people on the edge of care often have complex levels of need and have experienced trauma, loss and adverse childhood experiences.
The BCP Keeping Families Connected team was set up in January 2021 with the specific remit of reducing the numbers of children and young people going into care. The edge of care offer is to work alongside the allocated social worker to offer time limited intensive support to families, children and young people to prevent family breakdown and the baby/child/young person going into care. Our team is non case holding and we work creatively to meet the needs of the family and the young person. We work using restorative practice and we are attachment and trauma informed in our approach.
We seek to pull relevant services around the family and young person. This may involve allocating a worker from our team to work with a child/young person and another to work with the parents/carers. We are especially interested to hear from applicants who have worked with parents/carers of teenagers as well as with teenagers themselves. This work is underpinned by weekly multi-agency edge of care meetings to review the progress of our work. Another key part of the offer is supporting young people to access positive activities which is led by the youth workers in our team. We seek to provide exciting positive activities for young people such as climbing and high ropes and non-contact boxing as well as other activities such as arts and crafts and cookery. As much as possible we seek to support young people to access this in their own local community.
There will be the opportunity to work your weekly hours flexibly particularly as we sometimes need to offer support to families into the evenings and weekends.
Understanding the ‘intersectionality’ of the children and young people is also important and we really value and strive for that in our team so that we can strengthen our offer to the young people and families we work with and better meet their needs.
Feedback from Ofsted has been consistently good for the Edge of Care work in BCP. In November 2022 they reported:
‘The positive and purposeful work by specialist services such as the complex safeguarding and edge of care teams seen during the last inspection continues.’
If you have strong child centred values and are passionate about working with children and young people to keep them safe, and to support them and their families or carers to be the best they can be; then you are who we are looking for.
