Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and hard-working person with a keen interested in countryside management and public engagement to become a permanent part of the team at Elvaston Castle Country Park.

Elvaston Castle was the first Country Park in the UK in 1970 and its grade 2 star listed grounds have been a popular attraction to Derbyshire residents and visitors ever since. Derbyshire County Council has been working with Elvaston Castle and Gardens Trust to develop a long-term strategic vision for Elvaston that secures the heritage and site for future generations.

Working as part of the warden & ranger team at Elvaston Castle Country Park, you will:

  • Use your practical experience to help maintain the gardens, grounds and Local Nature Reserve through tasks such as vegetation/tree clearance, fencing, path repairs and habitat management
  • Communicate well with other members of the team, be well organised and a team player in order to support the team’s objectives; but equally be able to work on your own initiative.
  • Be a friendly face and a first point of contact for visitors while you are working on the park and help them with enquiries face-to-face, over the phone and via social media.
  • Supervise volunteer groups from a variety of backgrounds and support them to carry out practical tasks around the estate or in the allotment.
  • Help organise, promote and run public events such as family trails around the park and support with the running of our annual Derbyshire Woodland Festival.
  • Contribute to the safe running of the estate by regularly carrying out safety checks. This includes the fire alarms, legionella testing and the play area equipment.

The post is a permanent, full-time position working 9am-5pm on a two-week rota, which includes working alternate weekends with a rest day in the week. Occasionally, you may be required to support an event in the evening or on days outside of your rota – these hours can be taken back as TOIL or in some circumstances paid as overtime.

Saturday and Sunday hours will be paid at plain time where it is part of your normal working pattern unless it is between 7pm and 7am, where enhanced rates of pay apply. Enhanced pay rates are paid for Bank Holiday working.
