Oxford Economics seeks an Economist – Climate Scenarios & Modelling as part of our expanding Climate Modelling and Scenarios team based in London and Oxford.

This team is responsible for a subscription product called the Global Climate Service (GCS) which provides our clients with various climate scenarios and research around the economic impact of climate change. Much of the team’s analysis involves working with the Oxford Economics’ Global Economic Model (GEM), the most widely used commercial large-scale macroeconomic model in the world.

You will be a key member of the team, responsible for designing and generating our GCS scenarios on a quarterly basis. You will also contribute to our research on the macroeconomic impacts of mitigation policy and global warming.

What does the team do?
  • The Global Climate Service which includes producing regular briefings on climate-related issues and developing long-term climate scenarios covering a wide range of potential climate risks facing the world today;
  • Developing bespoke research papers and climate scenarios for a variety of purposes such as strategic or business planning;
  • Expanding regulatory climate stress tests such as from that published by the Prudential Regulation Authority;
  • Improving the properties of the Global Economic Model’s climate policy levers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create bespoke climate scenarios on our GEM for publication in our quarterly GCS report;
  • Contibute to GCS research notes, with a focus on the macroeconomic impacts of climate change policies;
  • Keep up-to-date with latest academic developments in climate change research and modelling;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve climate scenario assumptions and energy forecasts;
  • Support business development in growing the sales of our new Global Climate Service.
Person Specifications
  • First-rate academic training with a degree in economics, environmental science or a related field;
  • Likely to be a recent graduate or early careerist (0-3 years’ relevant experience);
  • Strong interest in macroeconomics, data analytics and climate research;
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills;
  • Experience in programming languages, using software such as Python, is desirable;
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and quantitative results, to non-specialists; and
  • Ability to work well within a team.
