The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) within the Faculty of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Modern Apprentice Technician to work as part of a small team supporting teaching and research activities. This involves the design, manufacture and assembly of components using a varied range of machine tools such as milling machines and lathes (including CNC and the interfacing of these), pedestal drills, mechanical saws, guillotine, etc, and a variety of hand tools and measuring equipment i.e. files, drills, micrometers and vernier gauges etc.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) provides a unique offering combining end-to-end multidisciplinary expertise from creative design, through to engineering design, manufacturing and engineering management of the entire system. DMEM also houses the UK’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), which is located off-campus at a dedicated site just outside Glasgow and is part of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS). We operate substantial and well-established collaborations with academic and industrial partners throughout the world. The successful candidate will join the Department’s technical team which provides support for the Department’s key areas of business including teaching and learning, and research and knowledge exchange. To be considered for the role, you will have a minimum of 4 Nat 5’s at Level C or above which should include Maths and Science and have good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.

The Modern Apprenticeship programme is co-ordinated within the University and gives the successful candidate an opportunity to “earn and learn” as they will achieve a SQA qualification during the 2 year programme. The initial appointment is fixed term for 2 years whilst the post holder undergoes the majority of their studies and some workplace training. Subject to satisfactory performance and business need, the modern apprentice will likely be moved onto an open ended contract if performance and commitment can be demonstrated.
