Job Purpose:

To ensure the provision of comprehensive, effective and efficient administrative support to the Hertfordshire Cohort Study Intergenerational Study.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • To plan and provide administrative support for the Hertfordshire Cohort Study Intergenerational study (HCS IGS) and the communication of these activities via reports, articles and presentations.
  • To review procedures and processes, ensuring they are fit for purpose and maximise efficiency, making recommendations for improvements where identified and implementing agreed change. Responsibility for maintaining high quality data collection.
  • To provide detailed advice and guidance of specialist defined processes, performing detailed analysis, manipulation and evaluation of results using specified methodologies, and to contribute to the interpretation of results.
  • To assist in cohort development including:
  • Supporting the setting up of new studies including writing protocols and obtaining/maintaining ethics approval
  • Supporting the development strategy for MRC LEC studies including attending MRC LEC study group meetings
  • Supporting the research work of senior scientists including literature searching and assisting with the drafting of scientific manuscripts
  • To undertake cohort management to include:
  • Organisation of data including cleaning, filing and archiving
  • Ensuring accurate completion of all documentation, reports and records
  • Liaison with collaborators and potential collaborators
  • Administrative tasks associated with the HCS IGS, for example organisation of meetings and documentation
  • Ordering of stationery and printing supplies, ensuring adequate stocks of supplies and monitoring finances and work resources efficiently and appropriately
  • To undertake cohort fieldwork to include:
  • Liaison with participants and general practitioners
  • Preparation of mailshots
  • Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to present summary information in a clear and concise format
  • Ability to make effective use of standard office computer systems including word-processing and spreadsheets
  • Able to plan and prioritise one’s own, and the team’s, standard and non-standard work activities
  • Able to successfully plan, organise and deliver support of projects to deadline and quality standards
  • Experience of contributing innovative ideas in order to identify and solve data management problems
  • Ability to use judgement to find solutions to problems for which no standard procedure exists
  • Effective negotiation skills & effective team working, with the ability to positively influence the way a team works together.
  • Ability to work proactively with colleagues in other work areas/institutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including being able to communicate new and complex information effectively to both lay and scientific audiences
  • Able to offer proactive advice and guidance on data management processes and procedures
  • Able to liaise with both internal and external departmental colleagues
  • Ability to deal with sensitive information in a confidential manner
  • Positive attitude to colleagues and others
  • Flexible working hours

Desirable Skills:

  • Previous research support experience
  • Previous survey experience, including contribution to and interpretation of data analyses
  • Previous communications and scientific writing experience
  • Able to present at group meetings
