The Students as Academic Partners (SAPs) Scheme offers an opportunity for paid employment to enable students to work in equal partnership with academic staff. Since 2011, the Scheme has supported approximately 100 projects to produce innovative resources and research.

The purpose of the SAPs Scheme is to encourage collaborative working across the University which actively supports student learning. This initiative has come to epitomise the strong partnership between students and staff at the University and plays a key role in promoting a sense of ownership and pride in the institution. The Scheme seeks to employ students as active partners of learning and teaching project teams based within the University.

Role and responsibilities of Student Academic Partners

As a student academic partner, you are a full member of the project team. You will be expected to actively engage in every stage of the project and to contribute to the research and writing up of findings.

The range of activities that you will be expected to take part in may include:

  • Involvement in running focus groups/interviews
  • Collating and analysing research data
  • Creating new learning resources
  • Working on developments in curriculum design
  • Evaluating previous innovations and changes made to a course or initiative
  • Completing literature searches
  • Conducting research into an aspect of learning and teaching
  • Creating toolkits or resources for staff and students
  • Presenting findings to colleagues across the University, including at the annual UW Learning and Teaching Conference
  • Writing up a formal project report

The Scheme is intended to support students to develop the following:

  • An enhanced understanding of yourself as a learner and researcher
  • Collaborative working skills
  • Communication skills including digital literacy

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Scheme is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled on a full or part-time course at the University of Worcester. You will be asked to provide your student number.
  • Before you apply, you should have fully considered whether this commitment is compatible with your studies and other time commitments.
  • You must be eligible to work in the UK. This means having either a UK/EU passport or driving licence OR proof of right to remain.

Please note, the application procedure is a two-stage process, that students will need to complete in order to become a SAP on a project.

First stage: The first stage, enables students to join the pool of applicants who are eligible to apply to specific projects. It is essential that students join the pool in a timely manner before going onto the second stage.

Second stage: Once students have successfully completed the first stage, they will proceed to the second stage by submitting a 250-word expression of interest outlining their experience and reasons for joining specific projects. Further information on how to apply to specific projects will be provided in due course on the SAPs Scheme webpage. Please note that acceptance on a project is not guaranteed but will be determined by the project lead(s) evaluating the expressions of interest. Project leads will be in touch with students directly regarding the stage-two outcomes/decisions.
